After graduating from the Wharton School, Gabriel Escarrer Jaume worked at the investment bank Salomon Brothers in New York, from where he took part in the successful IPO of Meliá Hotels International, founded by his father, Gabriel Escarrer Julià.
Mr Escarrer combines a strong vision and financial approach, with a pure ‘hotel’ vocation. After joining the company, he led the company’s expansion and its digital transformation, providing Meliá with greater financial strength in an increasingly complex environment in the international tourism sector, as well as a strong competitive position. One of the most influential CEOs in Spain, according to Forbes magazine, in 2019 he was appointed chair of Exceltur, the Spanish Tourism Alliance for Excellence. Since his appointment as vice-chair and CEO in 2009, he has managed an unprecedented cultural and organisational change in Meliá Hotels International, with a clear focus on corporate responsibility that has led to the company being acknowledged as the third most sustainable hotel group in the world by the sustainable investment agency RobecoSAM, responsible for evaluating companies for the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.
In 2016, he became the senior executive within the company and has since led an intense process of digital and cultural transformation of the group, as well as its financial consolidation. This strategy helped the company to be better prepared in the face of the great disruption that the COVID-19 pandemic caused throughout the industry at the beginning of 2020.
